Portland Charity is a charitable organisation supporting people with disabilities through education, care and specialist support services.

We believe all people with disabilities should have a lifetime of opportunity. We inspire and empower people to develop their independence, improve their health and wellbeing, and work towards more fulfilling futures.

Our services include specialist further education, residential care and independent living, assessment and diagnostic services, employment and life skills development, and accessible outdoor and community facilities.

Portland College is a specialist college offering day and residential study programmes for learners aged 16+. We support young people and adults with a range of disabilities, including autism, physical disabilities and learning disabilities.

Every learner has different needs, interests and goals, so their education and support programme is designed especially for them. Our programmes focus on three key themes: independence, health and wellbeing, and employability. Learners can develop Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT, explore vocational subjects linked to their interests, gain work experience and build their communication, social and life skills.

The Residential Learning Service supports individuals aged 18–65 through residential and day programmes in a welcoming and inclusive environment. As a home for up to 135 service users, it combines learning with everyday life, offering opportunities such as FE residential placements and short breaks. Learners and citizens can develop confidence, independence and practical life skills while being part of a supportive community.

Our residential and independent living services help people develop the skills and confidence they need to live as independently as possible. This includes residential care, supported accommodation and opportunities to prepare for a move into more independent living. Purpose-built independence flats and accessible accommodation provide a safe environment where people can learn, grow and make choices about their future.

Portland Assessments provides specialist autism and ADHD assessments for children aged 13+ and adults, as well as neurodiversity pre-diagnostic assessments. Our specialist clinicians provide NICE-compliant assessments to help individuals and families better understand their needs and access the right support for education, employment and everyday life.

Our Woodland Adventure Zone is a unique, fully accessible outdoor facility set within Portland’s beautiful woodland campus in Sherwood Forest. It offers exciting opportunities to build confidence, develop skills and improve wellbeing, with facilities including a climbing and abseiling tower, zipline, bushcraft area, woodland trails and sensory play equipment. Activities are designed to be inclusive and accessible, including for wheelchair users, and are enjoyed by learners, schools, families and the wider community.

Portland is a happy and safe place where people can learn, make friends, try new things and work towards their goals. Our specialist staff and facilities provide the support people need to thrive, with opportunities for learning, personal development, employment preparation, independence and real-life experiences across our woodland campus.

Course length: 1–2 years, depending on funding. Programmes are designed around individual goals and aspirations, helping learners prepare for adulthood, employment and a more independent future.
