In this week’s interview, we introduce Jo Cooksey who is a finalist in the Truth About SEND category.
Jo writes about the reality of SEND in her blog, First Time Valley Mam. Her blog explores the struggles her family face but also celebrates the progress they make too.
What inspired you to start your blog/organisation?
I was following a local Cardiff blogger, Cardiff Mummy Says and we got chatting on Twitter. She asked what my blog was about; I replied I didn’t have one as I wouldn’t know where to start or what to write. She helped me set it up and she was there from the very beginning helping me along the way!
What other blogs/organisations do you turn to for advice?
For advice I don’t tend to turn to actual blogs anymore. I’m in a send group for bloggers and they are all like my second family; any advice I need any time I want to rant about anything I head straight to that group.
Describe yourself in three words
Random, thoughtful and blunt!
Favourite thing to do if you have some ‘me’ time?
I do enjoy a walk up Pen Y Fan, and recently started to meet up with mates for games night! That’s always interesting.
If there was a film of your life, what would it be called?
You couldn’t make it up!
Which talent of yours are you most proud of?
My ability to drink all my mates under the table and still bankrupting them at Monopoly!
If you could be one fictional character, who would you be?
What’s the closest thing to magic?
Sleeping all night?
What advice would you give to someone who wanted to start blogging?
Just do it! There are lots of people out there that will support you and help you along the way. Marc has been a massive help in re-designing my blog, you find these people as you write. Just write what you want and don’t worry about the numbers. I started with the thought – if I helped just one person that would be worth it. I’ve written about everything in my life the last five years or so, the highs and the lows, it’s my online diary and in doing so, I’ve met some incredible, interesting people along the way that are now my mates.
What are you most looking forward to at this year’s BAPS Awards?
A few drinks, meeting people in real life and of course a full night sleep!
The Baps Awards Ceremony takes place 4th November from 6.00pm. This year we are at a stunning new venue – The Athena in Leicester. We’d love for you to join us for a fun night of celebration – book your tickets here.
