Bloody Awesome Parent
Someone who doesn’t blog but deserves recognition for what they do or have done. It could be the mum who runs a support group, a dad who set up an inclusive sports club, or parents who set up a much needed free school or have been working on behalf of parents in the background for years.
Sandie Davis
Sandie is a mum of seven, three of whom are
adopted and have Down’s syndrome, another has a
rare genetic life-limiting condition. She also fosters
two young people with additional needs. Over
the last two years, she has juggled multiple caring
responsibilities towards all these young people who
were considered at high risk if they caught COVID-19.
Hannah Turner
Hannah has two children, a five-year-old boy
with autism who is non-verbal and a neurotypical
two-year-old boy. Hannah has overcome so many
of her own challenges (having a benign brain
tumour and undergoing surgery, leaving her deaf
in one ear and with facial paralysis) but ultimately,
everything she does is for her children.
Emma Appleby
Emma fights tirelessly for the legalisation of
medical cannabis for her children, like her
daughter Teagan, who has hundreds of epilepsy
seizures every day. Emma has continued to fight
and campaign to get medical cannabis available on
the NHS. She has to fundraise £2,000 every month
to pay for a private prescription of the life-saving
medicine for her daughter.
Bethan Germon
Advocates and Angels is now a registered charity
that supports parent carers from diagnosis,
disability, palliative care and bereavement if the
support is needed. Its Chrysalis care packages
contain hygiene essentials to give parents dignity
when looking after their children in emergency
admissions. The charity has given 1,425 out in the
last year, has delivered them to every children’s
ward in Wales and hopes to do the same in England,
Scotland and Northern Ireland in the future.
