About Us

My Family, Our Needs is for parents and carers supporting children and young people with additional needs.

We offer information, guidance and advice on all aspects of supporting a child or young person with additional needs from birth right up to the age of 25. Whether you are looking for a primary school or helping your child move into their first independent home, you’ll find practical resources to help you here.

Just received a diagnosis? You can read about the condition, learn about organisations which can support you and then read a real life story from a Mum, Dad, Grandparent or sibling who has been through a similar experience or may have the same condition. How they live may be different to you, but sometimes it’s nice to know that you’re not alone. It’s easy to love your child but it’s not easy to break down the barriers they may face as they get older. Finding other families experiencing the same feelings, frustrations, achievements and joy as you can make parenting feel a little less isolating.

Accessing expert help

Through our annual Transition Event which has expert speakers on a wide range of topics, My Family, Our Needs has direct links to education lawyers, sleep experts, SENDCOs and housing specialists. Our Ask the Expert section of the website allows you to email us a specific question and we will do our best to get it answered. We know big organisations can sometimes feel intimidating and people you need to speak to aren’t always easy to get hold of. We aim to bridge that gap and make it easier to get families raising a disabled child the support they really need. If we don’t feature a specialist in the field you are looking for, please feel free to email us and we will try to put you in touch with someone who can help.

As well as all the guidance you will find on the Supporting Your Child page, we also have a Supporting Yourself section of the website because parents are important too. Whilst your child is your life, we know that day-to-day living involves a lot of other things too. Your other relationships, your work life, your own health and wellbeing and trying to find that perfect pair of jeans which fit round the waist but aren’t baggy on the bum. We cover the big things, the small things and everything in between.

Social animals that we are, you can also find us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Linked In. We’d love you to join us there too!
