28th August 2018 • My Family Our Needs
What’s it about?
The Transition Event East is our chance to put the spirit of My Family, Our Needs into practice.
Just as the website is all about information, guidance and support, so too is our event, but what makes it even better is that, for one day only, the people working to achieve the best future for young people with additional needs are all under the same roof.

Who should come?
With this in mind, the day has something for everyone. For parents, our agenda focuses on the key issues that can help your disabled child to become an independent, fulfilled and happy adult. Education, housing, employment and the move to adult services are big topics which have an even bigger impact on your child’s future and we have the right professionals to give you the best advice.
Those professionals come from local authorities, schools and support provisions to share their knowledge, learn more about those they are supporting and make the most of the unique opportunity to talk to parents and young people directly.
And, whilst our expert speakers cover as much of the topic as possible up on stage, we know that each family is different. This is why we have a dedicated one-to-one parent zone so you have somewhere quiet to ask experts your own questions, in your own time.
Keeping it all about young people
The Transition Event is open to young people too and throughout the day, local schools bring along groups of students so they can look around our packed exhibition hall. These are the products and services that work to offer solutions and improve their lives so we think it’s vital they see these things for themselves. The lively atmosphere also makes it impossible to forget who the day is about, why we are all there and what we want to achieve.
Workshops
Whilst focusing on the big topics that can build a better future for young disabled people, we haven’t forgotten the smaller details. Sex, confidence and respectful relationships are vital to a young person’s overall wellbeing but something that parents and carers may have concerns about.
We also know that financial independence and making sure young people receive the benefits and additional funding they are entitled to can make life that little bit easier for families. With these issues in mind, The Transition Event will feature workshops focusing on safe and supported relationships and how to navigate the complicated benefits system with ease.

This year we also have something new. Due to huge interest surrounding the topic of employment at our Transition Events in the past years, we want to devote more time to it. So, we are thrilled to say that, in association with Mencap, there will also be an employment fair at the event. Young disabled people can talk directly to employers, get tips about the interview process, and find out about the companies committed to working for young disabled people and their needs too.
