My Family, Our Needs loves bringing you new websites and apps that we think will make your life easier and our latest one is no exception. In fact, we think it could be a game changer.
With the summer holidays fast approaching, we know how important it is to plan ahead and have days out to look forward to. We also know how difficult accessible activities can be to find, something which frustrated Tom Harris so much, he decided to do something about it.
Tom is the chairman of a charity called Odyssians, who organise an annual summer activity camp for young adults with disabilities. After trying to find other accessible activities for the people who attend his camp but failing, Tom launched his own project called Sociable Life. It’s an interactive map of the UK where people of any age and any disability can easily find and share accessible activities. The resource is easy to use, whether by young people themselves or their parents or carers searching for them.
There are lots of things which make Sociable Life a great idea but we think that there are two which really stand out. Firstly, all the activities are current and kept up to date automatically, which means no trawling the internet looking for stuff to do, only to find that the page you’re on was last updated two years ago.
Secondly, the site is completely free to use and will stay free. It’s free to add an activity and it’s free to create an account. The idea that drove Tom to establish the website was that there should be no barriers to disabled people finding out about accessible activities or anything reducing the number of people he can help.
The idea behind creating your own profile and account is to make it easier if you think you’ll be adding more than one activity. You can also comment on other people’s posts to share your opinion and keep the conversation going about what you and your family are loving doing at the moment.
At the moment, the map features 150 activities, including monthly club nights for people with learning disabilities, annual camping holidays, inclusive playgrounds and bike repair workshops. The activities are so varied, there really is something for everyone.
You can see Sociable Life for yourself here and if there is an accessible activity you love and want to share with others, do it now!
